TITLE: TMT and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry for Advanced Quantitative Proteomics
Thermo Fisher Scientific introduced the Orbitrap Tribrid Apex and Orbitrap Excedion mass spectrometers at the ASMS 2026 conference, expanding the capabilities available for comprehensive proteomics and complex-sample analysis. These instruments can also be paired with Tandem Mass Tag (TMT) reagents for quantitative proteomics sample preparation, enabling multiplexed peptide analysis and relative comparison of protein abundance across multiple samples and experimental conditions within a single experiment, while reducing variation and enabling precise relative quantification across complex study designs.
TMT-based workflows can support a broad range of applications, including phosphoproteomics, drug-target studies, immunopeptidomics, and single-cell proteomics. Together with emerging single-cell and spatial approaches, they can help researchers move beyond average protein abundance and investigate molecular differences across distinct cell populations and tissue regions. This opens the door to more detailed biological questions: which signaling pathways change after treatment, which antigens are presented differently to the immune system, which cell populations show distinct proteomic responses, and where within tissues do these molecular changes occur?
This session will introduce the principles of TMT-based quantitative proteomics, highlight applications across different research areas, and explore how TMT workflows can be combined with Orbitrap mass spectrometry to address complex biological questions.
